Digital Citizenship
HOW I CAN TEACH DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP I believe it is very important to teach students to be safe, respectful and responsible online at a young age. Even younger students need to know what cyber bullying is and how to identify it. They also need to learn how not to involve themselves in any type of negative digital behavior. I really liked how this lesson plan I viewed described ways to teach digital citizenship to K-2 grades children. I teach Kindergarten so I really found this lesson to be interesting and useful. lesson. https://npelementary.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/k-2-unit1-goingplacessafely.pdf Digital Literacy It was very interesting to read how digital literacy is a life skill. It targets all areas of contemporary existence. Schools face the continued challenge of incorporating digital literacy at all levels. It is important and it shows when students progress faster as their digital literacy is developed. Along with learning digital literacy comes the respect and safety aspect. Examples of ways I would teach my students personalizing digital communication In teaching my students, first I would do a whole group discussion on safe, respectful and responsible rules, I would share as a group why it is important to obey the same rules when they are using digital media. I would model examples of being a good citizen and show them a visual on it. I would then have them do a think pair share activity on what it means to be a respectful digital citizen and the importance of being respectful. I would share the following apps with my students in a whole group setting. edutopia has quite a few lessons to share with students. I would tie in the social emotional and helping others with how to be a good digital citizen. I really found the ideas and apps from edutopia helpful. The winter reading app and the app for helping others was especially helpful. I use ipads for my class right now and they know all the apps well. I feel as though it needs to be more guided and that I would like to have them do reading comprehension or experience the social emotional apps that encourage respectful, responsible and safe behaviors. I would teach these lessons full group and I think the students would be engaged because they already have some digital literacy experience using the ipad.
