Reflect- Building Bridge Between my Practice, Action Research and What I am Learning. I am continuing to bridge what I am learning in this Master's Program to my methods in the classroom. What I am learning is helping me connect to my action research and apply what I study and learn my students in the classroom. I enjoyed reading from Baggio about how powerful digital images can be. He states that visual emphasis will work as long as it is stable and not overwhelming. If every screen is clamoring for attention, the brain doesn't know what is important and when it can rest. Ch. 6 pg. 56. These statements are very accurate especially when you are a teacher in the primary grades. The students are easily distracted as it is and extra stimulation, even in a visual approach is a challenge. They will begin focusing more on the designs that are not content related. Keeping it simple is the best approach when using visuals. I have heard comments from other teachers tell me that the current reading software program (iRead) has too many visuals on it. It may be possible since I've noticed many students slow down or stop and talk about the extra graphics instead of staying focused on the learning task at hand. In this situation less is more. When presenting my action research to my students I want to follow the advice given from Baggio which is a clear message that less is more. I will make sure it has more content and the appropriate amount of visuals. I also learned another important strategy when presenting. The three principals for determining my visual objectives.
Images have an impact and I want it to be a positive impact that will aid in my students learning. According to Clark, the cognitive process teaching is very descriptive and it is how I will present my action research when implementing it in the classroom. My students need step by step examples in their learning along with explicit instruction. This fact remains whether what I teach will be in a digital format or not.
